Waking up with an unexplained bite or sting is unsettling, especially when you're not sure what caused it. Most insect bites are harmless and resolve within days, but some require prompt medical attention.
Mosquito Bites
Small, round, puffy wheal (raised bump) that appears within minutes. Becomes a firm, dark pink bump within 1–2 days. Intensely itchy. Treatment: antihistamine cream, cold compress, avoid scratching.
Tick Bites
Often painless initially — you may find the tick still attached. Watch for the bull's-eye rash (erythema migrans) — a red expanding ring around the bite that indicates potential Lyme disease. If you see this rash, seek medical care immediately. Use our Bug Bite Identifier to assess your specific bite pattern.
Fire Ant Stings
Fire ants both bite and sting. The result is a cluster of pustules (fluid-filled bumps) that appear within hours. Very distinctive and usually obvious. Treat with antihistamines; watch for allergic reactions.
