Ticks are among the most medically significant outdoor hazards in North America. If you find a bite you can't identify, our Bug Bite Identifier can help assess it.
Prevention Protocol
- Apply EPA-registered repellents: DEET (20–30%), picaridin, or IR3535 on skin
- Wear long sleeves and pants, tuck pants into socks in high-risk areas
- Perform full-body tick checks within 2 hours of being outdoors
- Shower within 2 hours — washes off unattached ticks
Proper Removal
Use fine-tipped tweezers. Grasp tick as close to the skin as possible. Pull upward with steady, even pressure — do not twist. Clean bite area with rubbing alcohol. Never crush, burn, or smother a tick. See: Bug Bite Guide for post-bite monitoring advice.
